What are Essential Oils? | Body Glitz

Essential Oils have become popular in Organic Beauty/Skincare. The increased presence of these oils in local beauty, health, and food stores has sparked interest among many.  The ingredients of the most beneficial skincare products contains essential oils. Most beauty supply stores have a line of essential oils but beware. Every wonderfully scented EO is not created equal. Some oils should not be used on the body. Always check the label, and consult your doctor before using. Different plants have greater or lesser amounts of oils in their cells, and the quality of the oil is affected by climate and the harvest of each year. Tea tree and Chamomile Oil have been used to reduce acne.

How are Essential Oils created?

Essential oils can be removed from a flower in many ways, the most common is steam distillation where steam is passed through the plant material. As the steam condenses the aromatic essential oil in the plant material rises to the surface of the water and can then be separated off. The remaining water is the flower water which has taken on a delicate aroma of the flower oil. The most expensive flower oils are Rose absolute and Jasmine absolute. The yield is very low for precious herbs and flowers with Rose petals can produce as little as 500mL. The low yield creates a very high cost for some essential oil‘s. Floral waters can be a less expensive option. They provide additional benefits and aromatic properties. 

Before bed grab gently apply floral waters to the skin and neck to increase moisture and improve skin tone.

Using Essential Oils

Lavendar, Tea Tree, German Chamomile, Rose, Sandalwood, and Geranium can be used undiluted on the skin. ALWAYS DILUTE the first time you test a product.

Essential Oils are can be dangerous. Never apply them directly to the skin. Test a small patch on your skin to determine if you will have a reaction. Severe burns can result from using cinnamon oil without diluting.  To prevent reactions add them to vegetable oils, creams, or bath gels. Essential oils are not recommended to use during Pregnancy. Lavender, Chamomile, and rosewater can help manage anxiety. Breathing in these oils sends chemical messages to the brain that affect mood and emotion. Oils can and will stain clothing or wood furniture.

Most organic skincare recipe’s contains EO’s. When experiementing with oils always write down what you use, and how much you added. If you plan to create skincare for others, these specifics should ALWAYS be noted on the container. Keep these magickal recipes in a notebook or online doc for later reference.

Blending Essential /Oil’s

Learning to blend essential oil’s is not difficult. Identify what smell you enjoy and only use the oils you can tolerate. Using oils like Valerian Root can come off unpleasant to you or others around. When creating a fragrance you must pay attention to the top, middle, and bass notes. The top notes are what we notice first about a perfume such as sensual citrus or lemon or grapefruit or mint. These notes are the most volatile and fade quickly so it is important to add middle and bass notes to balance the fragrance. The flower notes tend to fall into the middle category, while woody and amber tones become the base notes they give the fragrance death and longevity.

Where should i purchase Essential Oils?

Essential oils are key ingredients when you are making your own skin and hair care products. Shopping for essential oils should be a very careful process. To create high quality skincare products be sure to purchase organic essentials oils.  Some plants will not be available as true essential oils. Be catious not to purchase synthetic oils. Synthetic oils are created through chemical processes that produce an artifical smell of the flower or herb they represent. If you are seeking therapeutic or pharmaceutical grade oils identify labels that contain the terms  genuine and authentic, vintage, or organic. When a drop of authentic oil is placed on a sheet of plain paper it will evaporate quickly. Fake Essential Oils will leave stains behind and feel greasy.

Plant’s that give a high level of oil such as mint, lavender, or orange it is usually cheaper. Plants that are delicate with low oil production are extremely expensive and are used in only tiny amounts in a product. . Some essential oils aid the body in fighting unfriendly viruses and bacteria.

Which oils should I start with?

The following oils provide a useful starting point:

  • Citrus oils such as lemon, grapefruit, lemongrass, lime, and sweet orange.
  • Flower oils  such as jasmine, rose, ylang-ylang and neroli.
  • Herbs and leaves such as peppermint, cypress, spearmint rosemary and juniper.
  • Woody oils from cinnamon and frankincense

Storing Essential Oils

Store oils in amber or blue glass bottles with tightly fitting lids to protect them from light and oxidation. To maximize the shelf life of your oils keep them in a cool dry place.
